Panasonic Milano Series ER-GB40-S Hair And Body Trimmer Review
Most men who grow a beard usually at some point in their bearded life choose to purchase a beard trimmer to help keep their beard looking neat and tidy.
However, with such a vast choice of beard trimmers in the market, choosing the right one can be extremely difficult.
I know it too well after having a beard for almost three decades and gone through a number of these devices.
Panasonic Milano Series ER-GB40-S Hair and Body Trimmer claims to be an all-in-one beard, hair and body trimmer. It is designed to help men groom not only their beards or the hair on the top of their head, but tame that body hair as well.
However, in my research I discovered some good and not so good user experiences of this device which we will go through in detail, so you have a clear idea of its good and bad points.
For the benefit of my readers, I believe in not just doing a review on the surface but actually dissect the product to get into every aspect of its features.

Settings, Combs & Cutting Performance
It comes with 19 different length settings, ranging from 1mm to 10 mm, with an increments of 0.5mm between each setting. This should give you an ample choice to trim your hair precisely at the required length.
There is also a zero setting as with all the trimmers, by removing the guard and shaving directly with the blade. This can be used for outlining and defining purposes or if you want to have a very close stubble look.
A convenient feature of Panasonic Milano is that you won´t have to worry about storing multiple combs as it comes with just one guard which clips on and off with ease. An easy to use quick adjust dial is provided to change the settings which will move the guard away or closer to the blades, giving you the right length for trimming.
The first thing that struck me was to check the quality of this comb. Since it only has one comb and if it breaks, you will end up with a trimmer which is quite useless without any comb.
The best way to check that was to go through hundreds of online user reviews and almost all the comments were favorable, saying that the comb is made of good quality material and holds out quite well. However, my suggestion would be not to store it on maximum setting so that it´s not vulnerable to breakage.
The width of the comb is 3.5cm which is neither too big nor too small to trim your beard ,give yourself a haircut or trim your body hair.
While we are talking about body grooming and in case you are wondering, I came across various comments where people used this trimmer to cut hair on their private parts without any nicks. However, I would recommend using a guard and not shaving directly with the blade and even with the guard hold the trimmer at the correct angle and not vertical on the skin.
If your requirement is mainly to have haircuts, this is not the best choice for you unless you maintain a shorter length in which case it will work fine. For regular hair cutting, a much better choice would be Andis clipper which is meant for this purpose and is a lot cheaper, too.
Other than a few people who commented that they had to pass it twice to get a good trim, most were satisfied with the cutting performance of Panasonic Milano Series ER-GB40-S Hair And Body Trimmer. They found the blades to be quite sharp, giving them a prefectly good trim.
I would however like to add my view here that almost every trimmer would have to be passed through couple of times or more for you to get an even trim. When we pass the trimmer on the contours of our face, it all depends on the angle that you are holding the trimmer, it´s quite acceptable that the trimmer would not be able to cut every hair passing it just once. This may also occur if the hair is coarse or curly.
Blades, Cleaning & Maintenance
It comes with Hypo-allergenic precision cut stainless steel blades, so you don´t have to worry about any allergic reaction. The teeth of the blade have very little separation which tells us that it is not likely to pull hair while trimming.
I have fairly coarse hair and I particularly watch out for little details like this one. If you have light facial hair, then this should not be a matter of concern while choosing a trimmer.
The feature of wet trimming with shaving foam on the face quite frankly goes over my head. Why would you want to have a face full of foam to trim beard? It will get very messy and besides you can´t really see what you are trimming. It will make sense if you are shaving without the guard to use some shaving gel or foam but not really for trimming.
The fact that it’s washable and you can trim even in the shower is a great feature. You can avoid all the mess in the sink and on the floor around the sink and give the trimmer a good rinse under the tap when you finish.
The trimmer has an inlet at the back of the main body for washing, so simply place it under the tap and the water will go through the hole and come out under the blade. You can also remove the blade unit and rinse it for in depth cleaning if necessary. Just make sure it´s fully dry before assembling it.
Occasionally, you should also put a couple of drops of oil on the blades to maintain a long lasting quality and sharpness.
Battery, Power & Cord
Panasonic Milano ER-GB40-S comes with a Nickel Metal Hydride battery which is not as good as the Lithium Ion battery but overall comments show that it holds the charge very well. It will give you 50 minutes of usage after a 15 hours charge.
It is only a cordless trimmer, so a slight disavantage there if you didn´t leave it charged and you are in a rush for any body grooming job. On the other hand, being cordless is also very convenient for usage in any area and you are not restricted to the length of the cable.
It has a docking stand and a cable from the stand goes to the socket. There are quite a few users who are not happy with the fact that when you start charging, a red light comes on but there is no indication for when it reaches a full charge.
One would expect the red light to go off or green once charged. You will just have to ensure to take it off the charge after about 12 hours.
One more plus is that it is fairly quiet so you won´t have any noise issue with the trimmer. There is no dual voltage and works only on 120V. So, a little more investment to buy an adapter to convert to 220V might be needed.
