Having used both the types for many years, i decided to give you pros and cons of each type.
The truth is that both have their advantages and disadvantages.
So, in an effort to help you determine which is best to meet your needs, here we will compare corded and cordless beard trimmers and talk about their good and not good points.
Another thing I would add is whatever trimmer you decide to go for, a barber quality beard trimmers would not fail you as they have been tried and tested by the professionals.
The Differences Between Corded and Cordless Beard Trimmers
Both corded and cordless beard trimmers can be used with great results for keeping your beard trimmed and styled. Whichever type of trimmer you choose is going to depend a great deal on your lifestyle, personal preference and your individual needs.
Here are the main differences between the cord and cordless beard trimmers:
The cord is the most obvious difference between the corded and cordless beard trimmers. While both types of trimmers actually need a cord, the cord on the cordless trimmer may be attached to the charging base or the trimmer itself and is used for the purpose of recharging the battery in the trimmer.
Whereas, the corded beard trimmer does not have a battery and must be plugged into an outlet in order to be operated.
There are also trimmers available which give you the option to use them corded as well as cordless. These will give you more flexibility of usage.
Amount of Power
In most cases, corded beard trimmers have more power than cordless beard trimmers. However, for most people including me, this really isn’t an issue since battery operated trimmers normally have enough power to trim a beard efficiently.
The only time i feel lack of power is during my longer trimming sessions when i fix my beard and do some body grooming too. You can refer to our comparison chart to check the battery lasting time for various cordless trimmers.
Ofcourse going for a corded trimmer will give you the maximum power for as long as you use want.
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Cordless Beard Trimmers
Here is a look at the pros and cons of the cordless beard trimmers:
Probably the best thing of a cordless beard trimmer is that when the battery is charged, you can use it anywhere including your car or motel room when traveling.
Some trimmers have a long battery run time so for a shorter travel period you won´t need to carry the charging cable giving you less to pack.
Also, you have more freedom of movement when trimming your beard because you don’t need to have a mirror near the outlet and you don’t need to worry about the cord getting tangled or pushing things off the counter in a crowded bathroom.
It is also useful to have a cordless trimmer for body grooming since you would do that mostly either in the bath tub or on the shower tray, to avoid leaving the mess on the floor and hear a lot of nagging.
Some cordless beard trimmers are 100% waterproof and can be used in the shower even if the water is running.
One negative side of using a cordless beard trimmer is that you may run out of power in the middle of your trimming and have to wait to finish the job until the trimmer recharges.
Also, with some types of batteries, if you charge the trimmer before the battery has reached the end of its power, you can shorten the amount of run time the battery gives you, and even the life of the battery and the trimmer. In addition, some cordless trimmers continue to drain the battery even when the trimmer is off and just sitting on the shelf.
Another thing you should keep in mind is that some battery operated beard trimmers have built in batteries, so when the battery dies, the beard trimmer has to be disposed of and a new one purchased. This creates a lot of waste and can be expensive over time.
In all of our in depth product reviews we have dedicated a section talking about battery & power and you will find every possible detail about battery usage and limitations if any.
Pros and Cons of Corded Beard Trimmers
Just like cordless beard trimmers, corded beard trimmers also have their advantages and disadvantages. Here is a look at the pros and cons of corded beard trimmers:
A good thing of using a corded device is that because of the fact that it gets the electric energy directly from an outlet, it won’t run out of power in the middle of your trim.
On many occasiones you will need to trim in the mornings before rushing off to work or evenings before a social outing and if you are in a hurry, you won’t have to wait for the corded beard trimmer to charge.
In lot of cases corded beard trimmers last longer before needing replacement than those that run on batteries
One disadvantage of a corded beard trimmer is that the cord can get twisted or get in the way when you are trying to trim your beard. ( I had a rough time once trying to groom my dog with a corded trimmer and the cable kept getting tangled around her ears and my legs 🙂 )
Also, you can’t ever use it in the shower and you have less flexibility of movement when using a corded trimmer.
